Delphi Book
Club
You're invited to join the Delphi Book Club! Your
membership is free, but you'll receive a wealth of enjoyment, entertainment,
and thought-provoking education if you attend. On the fourth Friday
of every month, at 9 a.m., the Delphi Book Club meets in the Gerber
Globe-Valve Program Room at the library. We share coffee, breakfast
goodies, and stimulating conversation about books. A regular member
or visiting speaker gives a review of the book, and then the discussion
begins. At each meeting, the upcoming book for the next month is announced
to allow everyone time to read it. The format is informal, the talk
is lively, and the books are always interesting. No one is required
to give a review, participate in the discussion, or even read the book.
You're welcome to come and just sit and listen! Social time begin at
9 a.m., and the book review begins at 9:30 a.m. Our upcoming books include:
On August 22, we will be discussing Water for Elephants,
by Sara Gruen. When Jacob Jankowski, recently orphaned and suddenly
adrift, jumps onto a passing train, he enters a world of freaks, drifters,
and misfits, a second-rate circus struggling to survive during the
Great Depression, making one-night stands in town after endless town.
A veterinary student who almost earned his degree, Jacob is put in
charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It is there that he meets
Marlena, the beautiful young star of the equestrian act, who is married
to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. He also meets
Rosie, an elephant who seems untrainable until he discovers a way
to reach her. The book is beautifully written, and illuminated by
a wonderful sense of time and place.
The Book Club has enjoyed many lively discussions
in the last few years. Here is a list of the books we've talked about
since our inception on June 26, 1997. Our attendance typically ranges
from 15 to 25 every month, but there's always room for more! We'd
love to have you join us.
